Seriously, time consuming in a whole different way. Plus, I have to squeeze my social life in every now and again (a must living in Madison). <br />
Let's see....<br />
1- My job is great. The people I work with are wonderful, and I'm totally spoiled. Our summer hours are superb and the dish that sits near my desk is always filled with M&Ms (what's not to love!?).<br />
2- My roommates are fabulous and I couldn't have ended up in a better living situation. For moving into a random house, with random girls, in a city I hardly know, I have not a damn thing to complain about.<br />
3- Two of my really close friends/former (and soon to be..again) roommates have also just moved down to Madison. C'mon...how has this all fallen into place so well!?<br />4- I have started taking sailing lessons, thanks to my aunts and uncles who bought me such a thoughtful gift for graduation. Windsurfing here I come!<br />
5- Doing freelance work for a family members company<br />
4- Designing a shirt for Made In The Now (<a href="http://madeinthenow.com/">madeinthenow.com</a>) on Sunday...I might have a eensie weensie nervous breakdown. <br />
<br />

A trip to the Olbrich Gardens, here in Madison. A must see. <br /><br />Maybe I was just more insightful as a student.....or maybe I just have way too many activities going on to keep a blog running smoothly. Either way, I'll take it.<br /><br />More later.Nora Langerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12518593638569492697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6965162008046765366.post-16110728926931547802012-03-15T20:51:00.001-07:002012-03-15T20:51:54.465-07:00A post for those who don't mind randomness...Recently I've set out on an endeavor (man I love that word) to do at least two sessions of yoga a week for the next five weeks. With Brandgarten being located just across the hall from <a href="http://thestudiomadison.com/" target="_blank">The Studio</a> (<-- click that, the place is amazing), plus a great discount as a tenant of Machinery Row, there really is no reason NOT to get into it. While it was something that I always wanted to try, it wasn't until I took a free class that they offered that I truly took it seriously. After only taking a few classes I've already seen a difference. It's crazy to think that 9 years of dance didn't give me the flexibility that a handful of beginner's yoga sessions have. I actually bent forward and <i>just</i> touched my freaking toes last class....I don't think I've ever done that! <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loszrEZvS_k" target="_blank">Anyway this video is pretty inspiring</a> (<-- click this guy too). I don't see myself doing handstands any time soon, but maybe one day :-).<br />
Also, had a rip roaring good time a few weekends ago when I went home and ended up taking pictures of my friends beloved cat. Yes, I'm serious.<br />

Change of subject: <br />I have some really talented friends, I mean REALLY talented. How lucky am I?!<br />
My dear friend, Emily, just finished/added to a font project that she's been working on for quite some time now ---> <a href="http://www.behance.net/gallery/ROLLER-CHAIN/3373319?utm_source=Triggermail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=project_cover" target="_blank">Roller Chain Font</a> (ps. stealing is mean). And, much like the rest of her work, it's pure genius. Everything she works on she puts her heart into and it truly shows. Take a look at the rest of her work, you won't be disappointed.<br />
<br />
Until next time...Nora Langerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12518593638569492697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6965162008046765366.post-13625708682507427952012-02-20T18:47:00.000-08:002012-02-20T18:47:24.341-08:00Portfolio Site<a href="http://www.noralanger.com/">www.noralanger.com</a><br />
<br />
There she is...the reason I took my web design class a second time, the reason I, as a freshman/sophomore, had many sleepless nights trying to re-size images and make links work, the reason I HATED web design in the first place. As a sophomore I knew I had to be able to design a website as a graphic designer, and if not design, than at least understand basic coding. Well, apparently, for me, two times is a charm because after taking my webdesign class over as a senior (not for credit, mind you) I can honestly say that it's not <i>that</i> bad. Retaking that class was one of the best choices I made to further my degree.<br />
Now I can focus on designing things to make my portfolio site that much better!<br />

Not just emotionally but physically. Last summer I had been basically living in three places at once; Madison, Menomonie, and Green Bay. Needless to say I've accumulated what can only be called 'the biggest pile of shit'. Not only has my shoe collection gotten completely out of control (I stand by each pair of shoes though, this is Wisconsin people, we need to be prepared for anything) but it seems like I have basically doubled everything that I own!<br />
<br />
My first task, when I got back to Green Bay was to sort through everything, and I mean <i>everything</i>. There was no box left untouched, no folder left un-opened, and no notebook page left un-turned. And while I managed to also go through each and every one of my shirts, I still managed to have an absurd amount of shit! Maybe it's because I'm emotionally attached, maybe it's because "it still fits and one day I might need to wear it" (right, because my "wanna join our three-some" handmade golf team t-shirt is destined to be worn one of these days even though I haven't touched it in a solid 4 years), whatever it is, I know it's not because I'm uber trendy. My reason for having so many clothes/shoes could probably be the same reason I have an addiction to pens. Yes, that's right. An addiction to pens. The first step is admitting you have a problem. <br />
<br />
Luckily I have friends that love me anyway, so much so that they came to visit me here in Madison.<br />
<br />
Happy would be an understatement :-) <br />

The few hours that we all stood at our "booths" literally flew by, and then it was time to clean up, pack everything into cars, and get ready for commencement the next morning. I talked to so many people that my throat hurt, and smiled SO much that my cheeks were sore by the end of the night.<br />
<br />
I was talking about afterwords how when I was a freshman I remember looking through the senior shows thinking, "OMG I'm going to do something so like fun and cutesy..." Gross. Don't.<br />
<br />
The most important things I learned were:<br />
1. Leave time for errors, because it's GOING to happen.<br />
2. Design something you give a damn about; so that when you are standing there explaining your shit you can back it up, with facts, personal consideration, and passion.<br />
3. Find some friends in Senior Show who also give a damn. Without the girls that I was consistently sitting in the senior show room with I probably would have lost my marbles. (of course that might happen once anyway, but at least then you have people to talk to; sorry mom and dad....you just don't get it ;-))<br />
<br />

EEEEK!Operation 'set up for senior show' is underway. My goal is to have everything set up by Thursday, so that when Thursday evening rolls around I can "relax", "unwind" and TRY not to think. This past week has been spent on web design, more web design and then designing some fun labels for medicine bottles. Did I need to do them? No. Did I want to do them? Yes, but at times not so much. I'm glad that I did though... it gave me a much needed break from designing stuff that was particularly wrapped up in my senior show brand manual restrictions. Being able to take a break and just design whatever the hell wanted, however the hell I wanted was a great outlet without getting so wrapped up in something un-design related (at times I would have much rather watched Glee or read one of Chelsea Handler's books, but once I start those there is no turning back). Because I don't have the bottles assembled yet, all I can share with you are the labels themselves. <br />

It's overwhelming, time consuming, and exhausting. Instead, just do. Easy, right? Meh. Lately I've been "alone with my thoughts" and when I say "alone" I mean totally surrounded by people who have been in my art and design classes for the past 4.5 years. (<i>Wow, it's been 4.5 years since I've been out of high school?? </i>Like I said, don't think about it.) I have just over one week till my show goes up, and then, ridiculously, comes down 4 hours later. Alllllll this sleeplessness, stress, anxiety, for 4 hours of appreciation (<i>at least I hope it's appreciated</i>). So while I have a shit ton to do, I instead sit here thinking about it all, and now, write it all down. Good idea right?! (<i>Oh, no biggie, I just won't sleep tonight</i>; that's been my solution all semester.)<br />
In my pit of 'thoughts' I decided, "<i>SHIT, I need some way to display my tins! A display on top of my display, that is, to display more things!</i>" So, my attempt at playing architect/wood worker failed when I thought about all the things I personally could hand build (<i>all 2 things</i>). Instead, I have my wonderful father, who's woodworking I will <b>always</b> brag about (<i>no pressure, Dad</i>), to make me a tin display AND a box for my monitor! Might not be quite as fun as building a solar system, but I'm not 8 any more (<i>although my woodworking skills are probably at the same level</i>).<br />
1 week, 2 days, 17 hours, and 57 minutes until senior show.<a href="http://www.con10ders.com/" target="_blank"> http://www.con10ders.com/</a><br />

<br />
Well, it's been just over a month since I last posted which might lead one to believe that I just haven't had stuff to post or work to show. I assure you the opposite is true.<br />
<br />
I can't believe how insanely busy I have been; I can't even remember the last time I went to bed before 3:30 am. In fact, I'm writing this post in class, hoping that my professor doesn't yell at me for doing such a thing. But the fact is, I'm done with my website (THANK GOD: for real, I'm thanking God. I didn't think I'd ever code my own website.). We've been blessed with a bunch of new professors here who truly seem to give a shit. It's great! Nothing's worse than taking an important class and having a teacher that doesn't push, doesn't lecture, doesn't teach, and doesn't care. I've had about two or three of those classes, and luckily I was able to re-take web design.<br />
Our website had to be on an art movement and then designed in that style. I chose the Constructivism movement because it was something I knew little about and enjoyed the graphic elements as well as the 3D aspect. I've uploaded just the layout of the website, but I promise, my coding is right on...<br />

We now begin designing our personal website, which is great because this is something I need for senior show anyway. And speaking of senior show....well no, I won't be. Details can be found AT the senior show! So if you are reading this, consider going! <a href="http://con10ders.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Here is our blog</a>, check it out, and enjoy that spiffy logo because I had something to do with it ;-).<br />
<br />
Also, more coffee pictures have been taken:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought that this coffee book would make me dislike coffee, but nothing has changed. So here I sit, guzzling coffee because a minimum of 2-3 cups a day doesn't seem to be enough...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another fantastic update: I've accepted a job at Brandgarten (where I interned) and am so very excited to move to Madison, live near some wonderful relatives, and work at a great company with even greater people!</div>

Yay school! Senior semester is already proving to be time consuming and hectic. Time for blogging, you ask? Well, no, not really. But I count this as a form of relaxation/down time.<br />
Last weekend was AIGA Design Camp and it was beyond amazing. I wish every weekend were design camp. Nothing would ever be accomplished, but if one were in dire need of a serious inspiration sesh then design camp would be the place to go. It's hard to leave a place like that and <i>not</i> feel totally ready to design the shit out of everything and stay optimistic. <br />
Today I took a few pictures for my Senior photography class. Our duty: to make a themed book that will blow potential employers away. My book is "all about coffee" (will come up with better name later...or maybe not). These pictures are for a coffee, almond, chocolate biscotti recipe!<br />

You know that great morning light that sneaks through your windows and plasters itself on your walls, tables, and floors? Yea, I love that.<br />
<br />
Also, we finally came up with a logo for the UW Stout Graphic Design senior show (a website to come soon). Some great collaboration between a few of us resulted in this little diddy. Stay posted for information on this event soon. It's definitely a can't-miss!! Colors are still pending, but for now you get the idea. :-]<br />

How am I suppose to know what I want to do after this when I've never known anything else? It's crazy to think that graduation is just around the corner and soon I will be introducing myself to people as someone else other than "student" or "intern". I can't put "student" on those various questionnaires, and freeloading off of my parents insurance isn't going to fly any longer.<br />
This summer was the most amazing summer of my life. I had a wonderful time studying abroad for about a month and then was lucky enough to have an amazing internship at <a href="http://www.brandgarten.com/">Brandgarten</a>. On the side I did a few projects as well. I did a quick logo for <a href="http://mattblogz.wordpress.com/">Matt Hintz</a> (be sure to check out his stuff), a very talented photographer who goes to school in Madison. It's always great to work on things for people who are interested in the same thing you are! I also did some senior pictures. A first for me, but I'm happy with the results and would love to do more!<br />

It's been the summer of photography, and I love that I have some friends to join me in my photog adventures. This semester is going to be crazy stressful; graphic design senior show, photography portfolio class, web design (*crossing my fingers that coding comes easily), and listening (yes, a whole class devoted to the skill of listening). There is so much to come in these next few months....Nora Langerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12518593638569492697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6965162008046765366.post-38811552419738936442011-08-21T19:48:00.000-07:002011-08-21T19:48:12.715-07:00"Crap-I-Wish-I-Had-My-Camera"Lots and lots of pictures; that's what this summer has been. I feel that the only way I can truly get to know photography is with practice, and while sometimes I can't imagine carrying my camera around for one more minute it's the seconds I don't have my camera that I regret. It's the "crap-I-wish-I-had-my-camera" moments that consistently remind me that carrying my camera around pays off more time than not.<br />

It's been a while, but fear not for I have some pictures to show!<br />
My internship here in Madison has been going great; wonderful people, wonderful hours, and stuff I'm interested in. Can't complain one bit! I get to bike to work every day and that's even better, especially by way of a bike path right on Lake Monona. The office is beautiful and the view from the office windows is also pretty great.<br />

My first weekend in Madison was great- I have some family here and that is so nice. I went and watched my cousin, Eva, do some horseback riding. She is quite talented and it was fun to photograph her riding!<br />

I was visited, here in Madison, by some wonderful out of town friends this past weekend. I didn't have my camera for every activity we managed to squeeze into the weekend but I did have it for the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. I regret not carrying it around with me more but sometimes it's nice to see things with "fresh eyes" and not through the lens of a camera. Regardless, the camera will be joining me more often!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">The first thing I, or anyone else for that matter, would notice about Amsterdam is the abundance of bicycles. I found myself in people’s way almost immediately; looking like a tourist with my luggage and walking straight down the bike path. Yes, I was that girl. It was a bit unnerving at times to know where and when to walk. If a bike wasn’t about to hit you a tram or car would, or even a walker. The streets were always full.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal">Because Amsterdam is basically a swamp, everything is built on canals and everything (at one time) was treated as though a flood could happen at any moment. The houses lean forward and there are hooks at the top. People only utilized mainly the upper floors of their homes; at least this is where anything of value would go (food, furniture, etc). The ground floor was avoided, as this would be the first to be destroyed in the event of a flood. The hooks would hoist anything heavy from the outside of the house to the upper floors, and the leaning of the buildings would allow the object being lifted some room to swing around without hitting the house. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal">The Anne Frank house is also in Amsterdam and while it did cost money to get in (as well as waiting in line for a while) it was definitely worth it. Visitors get the chance to walk right through the business, behind the bookcase, and up the stairs to the attic that the Frank’s were hiding in. The pictures that Anne put up in her room, to make it more exciting, are still up. The growth chart on the wall from Anne and her sister is also still there. Even the original diary of Anne Frank is on display. The attic, while there is no furniture in there, remains mainly untouched. It’s quite remarkable.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">This tour is one that I was looking forward to for quite some time, mostly because we were going to get to see “the Harry Potter” castle. I haven’t even read all of the books or even come close to seeing all of the movies, but I had seen pictures of the Alnwick (pronounced An-ick) Castle and thought that it was beautiful. Before that stop happened on our tour we made a few more. </div><div class="MsoNormal">First, the lovely and historically captivating Rosslyn Chapel (recently made more famous from The DaVinci Code). While the outside of the chapel was beautiful, it was the inside that was worth seeing (and, of course, a area where cameras weren’t allowed). The chapel itself was quite a bit smaller than I had imagined but it didn’t disappoint; the detail on interior was incredible. Rosslyn Chapel had been locked up for some 200 years and fell into a state of disrepair. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that it had began on its way of being repaired. In the 1900’s someone thought it would be a good idea to put a sort of concrete molding over the original sandstone carvings creating some sort of shell/shield. When that happened the wonderful colors of the sandstone were covered and some of the carvings ruined. Someone like myself would have never noticed that the building had been through so much. I can’t even begin to imagine what it looked like in its prime. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</style> </div><div class="MsoNormal">Alnwick Castle was the next stop. Being given 2 hours seemed like enough time, but we used every second of it and skipped the gardens. Because this is still a working/lived in castle, it remained in great condition. We were allowed to see the inside, where the Duke of Northumberland lives (only a few months out of the year), and it was so odd because it was if they literally had just pushed the furniture aside, put up ropes, and opened up the living room, dining room, library and hallway to the public. There were even family pictures everywhere! Of course, this too was a “no photography” zone. The rooms were even more immaculate than those of the Dublin Castle. After we closed our gaping mouths and headed back outside we walked over to where the tail end of a Harry Potter themed flying lesson was taking place. We didn’t do the lesson, but managed to get our hands on some brooms and jump around like idiots. Alnwick Castle even had a haunted dungeon and so many more activities. Definitely an “all day” place.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">The trip to Ireland was fun but quick. Not having enough time anywhere seems to be a problem as there just simply aren’t enough hours in the day. Dublin was busy, fun, and expensive- not totally what I was expecting. Ireland offered many activities and unfortunately we had limited time to choose our activities. </div><div class="MsoNormal">Taking the “hop on hop off” tour bus was a great option for us in Dublin. It offered opportunities for us to see as much as possible while being able to extensively visit areas of our choice (as well as get a quick history lesson along the way). We got to hear the explanation of the well-known Georgian style houses and their famous colored and architectural beautiful doors. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">We arrived back from our journey to the Scottish Highlands yesterday afternoon. The trip was amazing- touring all around the Isle of Skye for three days. And even though the bus was, at times, unbearably cramped, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. The weather was off and on rain and sun the entire time. Not such a bad thing until I look back at my pictures and notice rain drops on my lens. Our tour guide, Neil, did an amazing job of narrating the trip and telling us the legends for each place we visited. I wish we had that kind of dense history in the US.</div><div class="MsoNormal">Our tour led us to places like: </div><div class="MsoNormal"> - Inverness & Loch Ness (no Nessie I’m sorry to report)</div><div class="MsoNormal"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0mSWm_cX-4k/TeNcdHwEcSI/AAAAAAAAANk/rriZQqHlPQ8/s1600/_DSC0068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0mSWm_cX-4k/TeNcdHwEcSI/AAAAAAAAANk/rriZQqHlPQ8/s400/_DSC0068.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

The Glasgow Cathedral was just as, if not more, impressive. </div><div class="MsoNormal">While the ugly scaffolding on the outside didn’t have me thrilled, the interior was quite the opposite. (I suppose that’s what happens when you go to a town that’s so old; something always needs maintenance.) It still amazes me that stained glass windows can look so drab from the outside and so brilliant from the inside. The grounds around the Cathedral were also amazing. There was a nearby cemetery that offered incredible views of the Cathedral. The cemetery itself was layer upon layer of ancient headstones, most that were fallen over, withering away, or being taken over by nature. Hands down the coolest cemetery I’ve seen yet. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">Today was our first whole day in Edinburgh. A few of us headed out to get a traditional Scottish brunch, I ended up having one of the best meals of my life (although I’ve thought that about a few meals here) consisting of beans, an egg, potato bread, some fried meat and blood sausage. Blood sausage is way more disgusting looking and sounding than it tastes. I actually really, really liked it.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">We headed into Edinburgh and saw the outside of the Edinburgh Castle (should be seeing the inside later). Then we headed up to Arthur’s Seat. The walk was intense, but so well worth it. Switchbacks aren’t my list of favorites but for this view I’d do them again in a heartbeat. The wind was extreme and a bit scary, and at times knocking me off my feet (not so great when you are so high up in the air). Again, it was well worth it. When we got to the bottom of the mountain we it was dinner time so we headed to the Sheep Heid Inn, apparently the UK’s oldest pub. There I had Haggis. I have yet to have a bad meal here, I’d love to take it all back with me. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;"><br />

Such Bullshit.As far as the title of this post goes: apparently in Australia that's what the cool kids are saying now. Heard it from some Australians themselves. Kind of how people in the US started saying, "That's so sick man!!!" (yeah, I still don't even get that one), in Aussie it's, "We had such a bullshit time!!". Just a side note.<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">I can’t believe that my London visit has come to an end. After only 2.5 days I had already fallen in love with it. We were able to see so many amazing places, people, and architecture. To have such an opportunity is something I can’t be thankful enough for.</div><div class="MsoNormal">I have taken so many pictures and while I know I will eventually spend weeks editing every single one of them, for now I’m just focusing on making them cropped/deleted/adjusted. </div><div class="MsoNormal">The first day we got to London was fun, but exhausting. The 9-hour flight left us all pretty pooped, and myself nauseous. Regardless, we began exploring. First, to Hyde Park Corner and then around the gardens near by. A few of us later did some night photography.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

We went on a free tour and hit Hyde Park corner, Buckingham Palace, St. James Palace, Pall Mall (street), Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben. Unfortunately the London Eye was too pricey for us so we skipped that. Westminster Abbey was by far my favorite thing to see in London. We paid to get in but got a headset tour. I don’t even know how long we spent in there but as far as I’m concerned it wasn’t long enough. 2 weeks wouldn’t have been enough. Not being able to take pictures was really hard, so I suppose I’ll just have to go back if I really want to see it again! </div><div class="MsoNormal">Day three was a bit more laid back. St Paul’s Cathedral and the City of London, the original blocks of London, were the first places we ended up. We hit two of the art museums: The Tate Modern and the V&A. Both were really impressive, but for my interests Tate Modern was my favorite. It was great to see some of Diane Arbus’ (forgive my spelling) work after learning about her this last semester. Her photography is even more impressive and interesting in person. The V&A is so extremely huge; I felt that maybe 2 or 3 days would be needed to see the whole thing. After that we kept on walking around, saw the ruins of Winchester Palace and then finally Tower Bridge. London Bridge isn’t even worth mentioning, but Tower Bridge on the other hand was so impressive. Obviously seeing pictures of it gives one some kind of idea of how it looks but how it feels when you actually see it is a different story, I was very surprised by it. The night ended with fish & chips and some wonderful night photography of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, and the London Eye (pics to come soon). </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

I knew this time would come but damn it I'm just not ready!<br />
Seeing as today was THEE last day of classes, all of my major projects were due.<br />
<br />
I was happy to get done with ad photography, and although this was a fun shoot with lots of Photoshopping, I wish I would have picked something totally beyond my comfort zone. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, I still DO like these pictures a lot.<br />

After not knowing what to do for this open ended assignment I decided to just go with this idea that a professor had brought to my attention. I built the camera out of an old fruit cake tin and a mixed nut container. The nut container is what held the photo sensitive paper. Building it was pretty easy and actually so was getting pictures. It didn't take much trial and error and I feel that I got some pretty good images!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yj60KGK5q48/Tb43V6b4JvI/AAAAAAAAAIw/NDuCsdqF0-s/s1600/camera_DSC0115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yj60KGK5q48/Tb43V6b4JvI/AAAAAAAAAIw/NDuCsdqF0-s/s1600/camera_DSC0115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Yj60KGK5q48/Tb43V6b4JvI/AAAAAAAAAIw/NDuCsdqF0-s/s320/camera_DSC0115.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LhaRm6_B5Vg/Tb43Ut-mdUI/AAAAAAAAAIs/EWfPSkkW6XE/s1600/camera_DSC0112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LhaRm6_B5Vg/Tb43Ut-mdUI/AAAAAAAAAIs/EWfPSkkW6XE/s320/camera_DSC0112.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The nut container in the center of the camera was glued in upside down which worked out amazingly well, allowing me to pull the container out (lid still attached to the bottom of the tin), load it with paper, and snap it back into place.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway, here are some of the photographs!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nL5O9lOEcOc/Tb43PnUxMcI/AAAAAAAAAIc/4W6tChrQ84I/s1600/360pinhole_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nL5O9lOEcOc/Tb43PnUxMcI/AAAAAAAAAIc/4W6tChrQ84I/s640/360pinhole_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Chk0T1TDHBk/Tb43QBZ3DkI/AAAAAAAAAIg/k8kr7fhu27A/s1600/360pinhole_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Chk0T1TDHBk/Tb43QBZ3DkI/AAAAAAAAAIg/k8kr7fhu27A/s640/360pinhole_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ea2fYAycaDE/Tb43QsDLjBI/AAAAAAAAAIk/SYbdLTjiMkY/s1600/360pinhole_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ea2fYAycaDE/Tb43QsDLjBI/AAAAAAAAAIk/SYbdLTjiMkY/s640/360pinhole_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W68qrOZdzAs/Tb43RDL5YLI/AAAAAAAAAIo/nuJuSzZq62I/s1600/360pinhole_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="144" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W68qrOZdzAs/Tb43RDL5YLI/AAAAAAAAAIo/nuJuSzZq62I/s640/360pinhole_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'm pretty excited that they turned out so well! The car picture is especially interesting because you can really see where the curvature of the tin affects the photograph itself; cars are cut off and re-appear. Considering the recent weather, I'd say these are pretty good!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've also been working on my final print. Well, yesterday I decided to get it done it one sitting and so 10.5 hours later I had the prints done....that was after I found a typo 8 hours in. Talk about a heart dropping feeling. I was beyond peeved, but luckily I had caught it before I printed that word on the last 5 prints. So I fixed it and printed that word correctly on those. I'm still trying to figure out if it's worth resurrecting those first two...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I had said that I was going to wait to put my other prints on here until I gave one to my dad as a gift, but now that I've done that I can safely put those photos up. So here they are! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The project was a completely open assignment. I had no idea where to even begin with concepts and one of my friends had said "just don't think about it, it will come to you." Well, this is what came to me! It's this crude, ridiculous poem that my dad used to recite to my brother and I when we were little (yes, how odd, I know). My brother and I thought it was the greatest thing! It was pleasing to be able to finally put an image to what has been going in my mind for all these years.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They were a big hit and my dad was happy with the surprise! I suppose you are never too old to give your parents artwork. I'm happy this one is considered "fridge worthy" by my parents.</div>Nora Langerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12518593638569492697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6965162008046765366.post-80665661764454608622011-04-26T21:40:00.000-07:002011-04-26T21:40:13.493-07:00The End is in Sight...Sort of.It's been a while since I've posted, and as much as I hate that usually, I just haven't seemed to care. My weeks have been filled with homework, homework, a fabulous Easter break, and yes, more homework! The new signage project of designing signs for the Eau Claire Children's Museum has been kicking my butt, but don't fret for I have some progress to show. Key word = <i>some</i>. My main component as of now is coming up with a solid sign language for the children to gaze upon at the museum and with that comes the first task of creating a solid entry system for the people coming off the elevator. The questions that need to be answered in this entry are: Where are you? Who are you? What are you doing? Where is your adventure going to take you today? Keep in mind that all of this is looked at mainly by 8 year-old's. The answer, of course, is camping! The theme, "Under the Wisconsin Sky", is the big picture and from there the Industrial Designers and us Graphic Designers begin our work.<br />
My main thought with this awkward elevator exit space is that once a child/family exits the elevator they are to be greeted with those good ol' Wisconsin state park signs. You know, the ones that are uncomfortably familiar in all of their brown glory (I know WI people know what I'm referring to here). Anyway, when I think of Wisconsin camping those are what pops up in my mind (I can thank my many camping trips for that), that and those "Fire Danger" signs with Smokey the Bear standing next to it (that's for later though). In this space, I want it to feel as though the nature needs to be contained within the area, as if once one steps beyond the fence the imagination begins.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aK5UbcFZqsQ/TbeccG14EiI/AAAAAAAAAII/UBUQ9-smyOo/s1600/Picture+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aK5UbcFZqsQ/TbeccG14EiI/AAAAAAAAAII/UBUQ9-smyOo/s400/Picture+1.png" width="400" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I also added a "Wecome" sign with complementary stickers for the kids! Every state park has a sticker system and this one shall be no different. Besides, who doesn't like stickers!?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v3ufj1xHWng/TbecvrZxhcI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/fDY5KWCkFZQ/s1600/Picture+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v3ufj1xHWng/TbecvrZxhcI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/fDY5KWCkFZQ/s1600/Picture+3.png" /></a></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BVZNmLxFiZg/Tbect8vydVI/AAAAAAAAAIM/tBjIelOqj8M/s1600/Picture+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BVZNmLxFiZg/Tbect8vydVI/AAAAAAAAAIM/tBjIelOqj8M/s320/Picture+2.png" width="235" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div>Anyway, these are just preliminary thoughts and I know many more are to come. Next will be designing a mural, and a didactic panel! Ready, go!<br />

Our 2 week task was to:<br />
a. Design a 3D letter that is visually interesting, around 5inches in thickness and 12inches in length (I happened to get "X")<br />
b. Create that letter out of whatever you can find, making sure that it has a "draft" (you'll see that part in a minute). My letter happened to be made out of a million layers of cardboard and some rope (knots are always fun to look at!).<br />
c. Stick your sturdy letter into the vacuum plastic machine and cut out the final product!<br />
The end result was really quite amazing, everyone had a different letter and a totally different look to their letter! Some were made from clay, wire, rubber bands, foam, fruits, ping pong balls, and cans! It was a great fast project to get our class back into the swing of things (after doing that extremely long applied arts sign stuff).<br />

I've also started thinking about my next shot for Advertising Photography. I wasn't allowed to do food or service. And after much quick deliberation I decided to do an ad for Crayola! It was their website that totally sold me on the idea; did you know that they are very dedicated to the "green movement"? They use solar power to make their crayons, recycled plastic for their marker barrels, and even use reforested wood for their colored pencils! For every tree used, another of the same kind is planted. It's just another reason to use Crayola products!<br />
I'm still working out the kinks on my creative ads- luckily I have some creative roomies to help me brainstorm!Nora Langerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12518593638569492697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6965162008046765366.post-53498230584959207382011-04-10T22:25:00.000-07:002011-04-10T22:25:26.618-07:00Portfolio 1-on-1AIGA Minnesota's Portfolio 1-on-1 was this past weekend and what a blast it was. This two day event helped me out so much and I only wish I would have thrown myself into it as a younger student. Nonetheless, I can't explain how much of a learning event it was. Friday was a full day of studio tours, 3 to be exact. The first my group went to was <a href="http://sussner.com/">Sussner Design Company</a>, a tiny firm mainly involved in print design. The atmosphere and the people there were wonderful! The second place I went to was <a href="http://www.frankefiorella.com/">Franke+Fiorella</a>, a brand identity design firm. This small company was really neat to see- completely different than the first in design style and overall vibe, and it really reminds me of <a href="http://www.brandgarten.com/index.html">Brandgarten</a> where I will be interning this summer! The third and final place was <a href="http://www.space150.com/">Space 150</a>, a digital design company that changes their entire personal identity every 150 days (so keep tabs on their stuff, chances are the second time you look it won't be the same). I was extremely excited to see this studio as it is the workplace of many Stout graduates, some of who came and spoke to us about their studio. Space 150 is huge company compared to the others that I saw that day. I was so happy that I got to see 3 completely differently wonderful studios all in the Minneapolis area (actually within blocks of each other). <br />
The second day was solely based on the reviews of our individual portfolios- think speed dating for art students. We were each assigned three different numbers (representing tables) for different times throughout the day, in 20 min increments. I can't even explain how nervous I was for these short sessions, but after the first one I felt so much better. I got a lot of the same comments from the people I talked to and now will proceed to make the changes!<br />
This was a wonderful experience and I'm so happy that I forced myself to go! <br />

These are my final ads for the "Easy Cheese" shots I took. The teacher was really pleased with them and so am I! I learned a lot doing these shots and am excited to get started on the next three. Now to think of a product.....<br />
